InfoEd SPIN Instructions

Instructions for funding opportunity searches using the InfoEd SPIN module:

1. Enter http://infoed.uchc.edu. Click Go.

2. Click SPIN and a new page will appear. For a simple search, enter any keyword that you are interested in. For a phrase, enter the words between quotation marks (i.e., “your phrase here”). Click Search.

3. For a complex search, Click Advanced Search. A new page will appear.

4. Click Keywords. When a new page appears, check off the boxes to the right that you are interested in and click Select. For example, if you check the Medical box, a search will be conducted in the entire Medical field. If you want to search a specific item(s) in the Medical field, click Medical (not the box). Then select specific areas you are interested in from the alphabetic list in the middle pane. To choose multiple items hold down the control key and select the items one by one; they will be highlighted.

5. Once you have selected the items click Select. Please do not change any default settings (i.e., "and" or "not") unless you are absolutely sure of its impact on your search.

6. Now, go to the next sections below (Applicant Types and Award Types) and choose items that you need following the same process as above. (You may wish to skip the next few sections and chose the last item.)

7. Go to the Additional Funding Opportunities Information. Click (show) on the left.

8. Click Deadlines and chose an appropriate button according to your preference. If you want to search for opportunities within specific deadline dates, chose the Range button and then enter the dates to the right using the MMDDYYYY format.

9. Click Save Changes. (If you are a first time user, create an account when prompted. Otherwise, proceed to the next step).

10. If you wish to save the search, click Save (give it a name and choose a destination where you want to save it).

11. Click Run. The search will appear. (You may save the search. This time you may need to give it a different name.)

If you want to do search again in the future for different dates or with different keywords, follow the steps below:

  • Log into SPIN and click Advanced Search.
  • Click Load Search; choose a search from the saved searches.
  • If you want to change the search criteria, click Delete Items. All search terms will appear. Check the items that you want to delete and then click Delete.
  • Now choose new items as described before.
  • Change the date under Deadlines (enter a time period for your search).
  • Click Run Search; wait for the page to appear.
